The two-day post-conference tour will depart Valdivia at 0830 on Jan 10, 2019, and proceed to Puerto Varas and on to the Ensenada area (approximately 3-4 hours by motor coach). The vistas along the way will include intensive forestry plantations, agriculture (especially dairy farming), several big rivers draining the glacial-moraine-dammed lakes characteristic of this lake region of Chile, and spectacular volcanoes – Osorno, Calbuco, Tronador, and others. The trip will provide biogeographic and cultural cross-sectional and historical views of this fascinating part of the world, and feature findings from current research on wood in rivers impacted by various volcanic processes.
The trip will be led by research group leaders and colleagues Andres Iroume and Hector Ulloa, Andy Russell and Alejandro Dussaillant, and Fred Swanson and Julia Jones.
The meeting registration fee does not include lodging (each person is responsible for paying their lodging fee to the proprietor), but it does include transportation. In addition, we will collect a fee of $21,000 (US$32) for a group lunch and a group dinner in Ensenada on Jan 10. Arriving to the Ensenada area, we will stop for a lunch at the Bonbon Oriental restaurant and then we will move to the Blanco-Este river sites. Returning to Ensenada after the field visit, we will have a group dinner at Parque Valle Los Ulmos with a traditional “asado de cordero” (roasted lamb).
If participants are staying in Ensenada the night of Jan 10, we suggest contacting Cabañas and Camping Barlovento (http://www.cabanasycampingbarlovento.cl/, contact person Rocio) or Hamilton´s Place (https://www.hamiltonsplace.com/en-gb, contact person Eloa). If participants are staying in Puerto Varas the night of Jan 10, transportation will be provided after the dinner to their lodging, and back to Ensenada on Jan 11. Drop-off and pick-up in Puerto Varas will be at Plaza de Armas (see location in https://goo.gl/maps/ZBiXQFEenjS2); near this location you will be able to find several hotels and hostels.
After field visits in the Ensenada area on the morning of Jan 11, we will arrive back to Puerto Varas by midday, and participants will have options of departing for Puerto Montt airport where they can catch late afternoon flights (transportation from Puerto Varas to the Puerto Montt airport will be available) or returning to Valdivia in the evening, and other possibilities.
The number of participants is limited, so please register here no later than November 23, 2018.
